5:24 pm - Christmas Fun
|
|
MERRY CHRISTMAS (Belatedly)
Had a wonderful X-mas eve, this time complete with real piano music for caroling (as opposed to last year's funeral dirge karaoke). My uncle was in town this year and was able to lend his talents as a musician ^_^. He also lent his considerable cooking skills, giving us some to die for cinnamon rolls for X-mas morning. I think my tastebuds are still humming.
Had a lovely Christmas day dinner - the food was good and the company better ^_^. We played Tripoly for quite some time and while I didn't win, I didn't lose that badly (well, there was one moment I was down to my last five chips, but a good round of poker pulled that up). Our first year Tripoly player, my uncle's friend from work, was a good sport as she broke the long time streak of beginners' raking in the chips. She said she always wanted to be different.
The rest of the family has come up to the 'ole homestead (aka my Grandmother's house) and we're getting ready for the fourth or fifth round of family bonding .... only another week of it to go ^_^.
I hope all my friends, both RL and LJ, are having wonderful holidays too!

10:05 pm - GAH!
|
Must rant about Veronica Mars. Was yelling at TV much to roommate's suprise, and need to let off steam.
First of all, the whole thing the past three episodes has been whether or not Veronica's dad is really her dad. And the potential biological father has been Jake Kane, father of her ex-boyfriend Duncan (who suddenly dropped her like a hot potato for unspecified reasons). Okay, that makes for much ookiness.
The ookiness factor just got raised. Stupid, stupid VM just threw away the results for a paternity test she did for her and dad, out of some "oh, he raised me so he is my father" deal. Which, you know, would have been a much sweeter moment IF SHE HADN'T POSSIBLY DATED HER HALF BROTHER!!!!!!!! The last bit in the episode implied at least she's relegated maybe-bro Duncan to full brother status. Either way, I'd like resolution here. Should all future Duncan & Veronica scenes by viewed through incesty glasses? Do they have a chance to get back together? (not that I want them too, there are characters with actual personalities for Veronica)
I hope the writers at least keep them on clearly non-sexual terms until this gets resolved at least. Because there's only so much ookiness a girl can take.
In other words -
GAHHHH!

Saw this on trokair's journal...
You Are a Liberal Republican |

When you tell people that you're Republican, they rarely believe you.
That's because you're socially liberal - likely pro-choice and pro-gay rights.
You're also not so afraid of big goverment, as long as it benefits people and not politicians.
You are the most likely of any Republican type to swing over to the Democrat side sometimes.

7:34 pm - My new favorite show
|
I have a new favorite show. And for the first time, it is *not* a show that is in its last/hopefully last season (Buffy, Angel, West Wing...) and I can learn everything via Internet.
It is a new show. It started this season.
It is Veronica Mars, and it rocks!!!!!!!!!
There are plot twists, there is a mystery, there are secrets all around, but the lead is quirky and not broody about her secrets, there are hot boys (I have my priorities!) and most importantly - I'm getting at least a whole season.
The last new new show I liked was only a mini-series (>>insert rant for more 4400 episodes here>>)
I think this is the first good thing UPN has produced in a long, long time.
I mean, these *are* the people who gave us the last 2 seasons of Buffy.... and are still trying to inflict Enterprise on the world. *shudders*
But Veronica Mars is good.
Really. It is.

Just found most awesome HP site. Harry Potter: The Musical(s) - takes complete musicals and reworks them to fit the books. Really, really good filk. It's at http://home.att.net/~coriolan/musical/table5.htm . I especially like The Order, which is based off of Chicago (and includes such wonderful songs as Voldemort's "All I care about it blood" and Fudge's number, "I can't blunder alone"). And if you've ever seen 1776, then you'll get a kick out of "Professor Lockheart", which gives a spin on the teachers telling the good ole professor why he must be the one to go the Chamber of Secrets.
Filk is fun.

2:43 pm - Fight the Power
|
Ironing is evil. It must destroyed and the fashion police must learn that wrinkled does not mean slovenly and dirty. All formal wear must be declared fashionable wrinkled, esp. formal wear for the caterers.
Ironing was created by evil people who didn't know what to do once torture with hot irons was outlawed some time ago in favor of making people watch bad TV. The hot iron people were traditionalists and wanted their ways to survive, so they pretended to convert to fashionism in an effort for ironing to continue.
We must seek out their hidden cult base and destroy them, for wrinkled shirts everywhere!
No! I'm not crazy! Really, this is true! It must be!
....................
The men in their evilly pressed & ironed white coats are coming to take me away.
Back, demons of darkness!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
Am handing out candy to trick-or-treaters. My roommate and I plan to palm many unwanted lollipops on the little suckers ^_^. There is much candy to be had. Fun all around.
On another note, been working lots lately - money is verry nice. Especially if you want a labtop. And comic books. In the Land of Antique Shops, aka downtown Fredericksburg, I found a place, Way Back When, that among other things, sells comic books. Older comic books, primarily from the 80s. Since I looove The New Mutants and Power Pack, one which has split off into various X-titles and another has been lost altogether (I miss you, Katie Powers!), I am very happy. Two trips later, I already have 12 assorted issues, and plan to go back for more. Much more. I love those 80s era books (mostly because they're the ones my uncle owns so I actually have a clue what's going on in the Marvelverse). I plan to go back. And buy. But not any of the later issues, because it is a rule that things start to stink at the end of any series.
>> insert mourning over West Wing here. Also Buffy, Angel, Lois & Clark, and any others you want to include. When a show jumps the shark, it is a sad and terrible thing. >>

Happy birthday Libby and Kyle! Thoughts of cake and presents to you.
In other news, for my fellow Buffy fans, I highly recommend this link - An OMWF Parody. If you've ever felt like things took a turn for a worse come season six, go there. You'll laugh very, very hard.

9:32 pm - All Settled In
|
|
I'm all ready to start classes tomorrow. First class is at 10 o'clock, the Art of Literature. Next is Beginning German, and then a meeting for my on-campus job. I know where everything is (yay) and hopefully can get there on time (I'm still figuring out how long travel time takes me).
My roommate's fine, my pictures are up, and I've already starting making piles of unnecessary papers ^_^. I've even started meeting people! There's even one girl who likes comic books and fantasy, and another that joins me in out-of-state awkwardness. So, all good.
Here's to a good start for classes tomorrow.

8:53 pm - Away we go
|
|
Everything is packed. My room's been cleaned out of every single thing I think I could possibly need/want at college, and I know I'm forgetting something (Murphy's law states that I am). Everything fits into:
- 1 suitcase - all clothes, excluding sweaters to be mailed at a later date and...
- Six hangers - dresses and blouses
- Three boxes - sheets, towels, books, cups
- One under the bed drawer - toiletries
- 2 trash cans - misc
- 2 crates - hair things, more towels
Not to mention,
- 2 big boxes (monitor and computer)
- And, a DVD player
We leave tomorrow morning, tour DC on Friday, visit my grandmother Saturday & Sunday, then I move into my dorm room on Monday. Provided everything gets hooked up correctly, I'll be posting next from my dorm room at UMW (University of Mary Washington).
Wish me luck!

5:54 pm - I love my brother
|
I'm pretty computer illiterate, and don't know how to take care of my computer. My brother's solution? He typed up a list of things to do, including instructions on where to find the programs (ex. scandisk) and explanations as to why doing this is important. Since I'm taking this computer to college, it's nice to know what to do to keep it working. He even included a section describing all the computer information I might need to tell someone if I do need to ask for help at school.
This is the sweetest thing he's ever done for me ^_^.

9:10 pm - Getting ready for college
|
Just got back from my trip to 'Preview' - kind of sort of orientation not quite. Registered for classes (Computer Science, Psychology, Literature, Film Studies, and German), saw my dorm room (air conditioned!!!), and started meeting people. So, all of goodness.
Upon my return, I've been going through my e-mail (gone five days, it all piled up). Found out Fairy Tale is nominated at Vampire Kisses Awards - wahoo!.
So, life is good.

2:56 pm - Onward to graduation
|
|
Went to Class Day today. That's the graduation dress rehearsal marked by the class will, class prophecy, and class history (all of which were loong and boring to everyone who is not in on the jokes) and.... *trumpets* a speech by me.
Of course, said speech happened only because the intended speaker didn't want to do it and handed the job off to me. But I happily took it 'cause I got out of doing the class history. And my speech was full of fun goodness... and suspiciously like my last LJ post ^_^.
( If you care, here is my speech )</span></p>
Yeah. That's all. Graduation on Sunday. Icky forecast :(. I cross my fingers for better weather, or at least enough rain to force us inside (because if it is just cold we'll be outside).

10:25 am - End of an Era
|
Yesterday was my last day of high school. Well, technically today is but I have no interest in a volleyball game/cookout and decided to sleep instead. But I digress.
I cleaned out my locker, packed up all my notebooks, returned my last textbook, and took my lock off and put it in my pocket. I think this was the first time I realized how much was changing. I have no more locker. No need to be in school at seven in the morning, talking to friends while eating a breakfast I hastily packed. No study hall, physics, math, english. No more lunches in the cafeteria.
The instant I took off that lock, I said, I'm not coming back; I no longer have a need to keep things here; My prescence is no longer required.
It is a strange feeling. High school has defined me for four years of my life, before that was middle and elementary. I've spent twelve years working under certain expectations. And now I'm moving on to something different. Oh, I expect college will have many similarities to high school, but it will still be profoundly different. New people, new place, (new state!), new everything.
I don't know how I feel about this. I'm ready for the change, yet part of me wants to return to the familiar, the known.
I'm sad, I'm happy, but most of all, I'm ready. I just wish I knew what I was ready for.

11:57 am - Trojan War
|
Just saw Troy last night. I thought it was going to be a somewhat bland and disappointing adaption of the Iliad, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was actually ... pretty good (and since I've read the Iliad, I can say that). Brad Pitt may not be the finest actor in existence, but I think he managed Achilles' very well. For once, I felt like Achilles had a little more depth than a spoiled little prima donna. Though I was a bit disappointed by how they handled his death (it felt like they had finished the script, then said oh crap! we're supposed to kill Achilles!), I forgive them since that was the only thing that really bothered me. I'm not saying this was the best epic ever made, but it isn't the worst. It was definitely worth going to see.
And Paris? Biggest wussy boy *ever*. It felt strange seeing Orlando Bloom in a wussy boy role, since the other movies I've seen him in he's been all action!hero. Though he does redeem himself at the end with an almost Legolas-like moment, it barely makes up for all of Paris' wussiness. Really, Helen. You started a war for *that*?
